The blog Student Loan Info for Parents has an interesting discussion of a recent Chicago Tribune article on how the credit crunch is affecting student loan consolidation. The short version is: It’s bad. Most of the private companies aren’t offering consolidation any more (including Sallie Mae, the biggest student loan lender in the country). You CAN still consolidate through the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Direct Loan Program.
